The team at Greenway Steel is proud to be turning on our website for the first time. We are announcing that we are open for business.
This little milestone for us comes at an especially unfortunate time for so many. An especially dangerous time for millions of people displaced not just from their homes and country in Ukraine but from their loved ones as well. The crisis is first and foremost in our thoughts and desires to see resolution.
Yet in the background of this unnecessary tragedy unfolding before us we get the latest release of UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change outlining a future for our planet characterized by a very bleak assessment of what will transpire without significant change in a short window of time. Sure, this news can take a back seat to immediate and pressing tragedy. The tragedy though described is real and no less dangerous to the hundreds of millions of people most vulnerable to consequences of climate change. The irony being these people are some of world’s most poor, and with negligible carbon footprint, having had no impact on the change that will be impacting them.
Most everyone reading this will fully appreciate the value of metals and steel in our daily lives. We fully appreciate the importance of steel supporting the transition to a carbon neutral economy. Most of the world’s steel production occurs in countries with carbon targets. Major steel producers have all announced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reduction Strategies. Cleveland-Cliffs well stated in a recent investor presentation (Sept. ’21) that, “The problem is global warming, and CO2 is the proxy.” The steel industry is galvanizing around new technology being brought to production scale. SSAB’s HYBRIT production delivered fossil-free steel to Volvo for production. Nucor and GM partnered in a supply relationship of net-zero steel with GHG emissions being balanced by an equivalent amount being removed. H2 Green Steel aims to produce five million tonnes of green steel annually with true hydrogen-based production.
The long-term sustainability of the world’s steel industry is of vital interest to all of people. All of us in the steel and metals supply chain as well as manufacturers for whom steel plays a vital role will play a part in this challenging transition ahead.
Greenway Steel intends to support these interests across the supply chain. We provide solutions in efforts to craft GHG Emissions Reductions Strategies. We provide accurate accounting tools to measure carbon footprint. We provide offset and credit strategies. We support our clients, customers and partners with opportunities utilizing latest technological advances to get behind the meter and reduce emissions.
It will take all of us in the supply chain to make the transition a reality and to ensure that the world is a better place for our children. And to ensure that steel industry continues to be a leader as a sustainable global resource. We will do our part by providing honest, transparent, cost-effective tools and communication that value long term, sustainable relationships.
We are open for business and we look forward to supporting your efforts.
